TRAFOTECH-2010, the 8th International Conference on Transformers was held on 18th & 19th January 2010, at Hotel ‘The Leela’ in Mumbai coinciding with ELECRAMA 2010, the largest exhibition of Electrical and professional Electronics.

Theme

The theme for TRAFOTECH-2010 was, “Enhanced availability through standardization”.

TRAFOTECH-2010 “call for papers” received an overwhelming response from Indian & Overseas experts ( 107 Synopses). 50 technical papers were selected for presentation by rapporteurs.

TUTORIALS



1) The Tutorials on Sunday 17th January attracted a record 180 participants. Details of Lectures by renowned speakers were as under.

IV. “Moisture Equilibrium in Transformers” - by Prof. Sivaji Chakravorty, Jadavpur University ,WB


2) The Inaugural session of the conference on Monday 18thJanuary 2010 attracted more than 475 participants including special invitees & press. Mr.H.K.Kulshresta, Chairman IEEMA Transformer Division & Organising Committee Chairman gave opening address. Mr. Murali Venkatraman President IEEMA, delivered the presidential address, while chief guest Mr. N.N. Misra, Executive Director NTPC delivered the Inaugural address and declererad TRAFOTECH 2010 open. Mr. M.Vijayakumaran ,Chairman (Technical Committee) gave the vote of thanks

Mr. Satyaban Sen, received the life time achievement award for his contruibution to the Transformer Industry. A citation & Shawl was presented to him by Mr Jitendra Mamtora, Vice president, IEEMA. Mr Satyaban Sen released the TRAFOTECH compendium which contains Technical papers & proceedings of all 7 TRAFOTECH Conferences till 2006.

3) A special session was presented by Mr. P. Ramachandran, ABB, enumerating the technological changes that have taken place in the last four years since TRAFOTECH-2006.

4) This session was followed by 6 Technical Sessions, which were as under.

In all 50 papers including 14 from overseas were presented over two days of the conference. More than 450 delegates participated in the conference.

3 keynote addresses were delivered by international experts as under

  • Mr. Thomas Fogelberg, ABB power Technologies, Sweden on “Capabilities for building reliable power transformers
  • Mr. Zoltan Luspay, CEO CG Electric System, Hungary on “Material, Manufacturing and Testing
  • Mr. Ugo Piovan, Weidmann Electrical Technology AG, Switzerland on “UHV AC Insulation and 1200 kV lead-exit


    5) The concluding session was chaired by Mr. M Vijayakumaran, chairman technical committee.

    Three papers were selected for best paper awards by a special committee. The winning papers & their authors are as under
  • “800 KV Ultra HVDC Transformer“ by Mario Schenk & others , Siemens AG, Germany
  • “Universal Spare GSU Transformer for Ontario Power Generation Inc., Canada“ by Krishnamurthy Vijayan & others of Pauwels Canada Inc.
  • “Multiple Tools of Condition Monitoring Adopted in GETCO” by U.C. Patel & others by GETCO.
    Prof. Dr. S.V. Kulkarni, IIT Powai was awarded with a special award by the committee for his contribution to TRAFOTECH- 2010


    6) TRAFOTECH- 2010 had many firsts to its credit:

    a) Fully web enabled process – right from submission of synopsis/final papers to scrutiny, intimation of accepted papers and delegate/author pre-registration etc.
    b) Highest number of synopses - 107
    c) Highest number of papers presented over two days.- 50
    d) Highest number of delegates - 450+
    e) 19 Sponsors
    f) Highest feedback forms collected 600+ over two days ( 10 Cell given as phones as prizes)
    g) Release of TRAFOTECH Compendium


    In conclusion the committee felt that they should review and monitor the standardisation progress in the industry continuously, Process to be discussed & finalised in the specially called meeting.which will be convened with full technical committee members in February 2010 in Ahmedabad
