Background

Power sector development programme in India has now gained momentum.  Policy makers have realised that economic development of the country will be seriously hampered if due attention is not given to the power sector to ensure that sufficient and good quality electrical energy is made available to consumers at affordable price.

The power transmission & distribution system goes through distinct stages of development. The natural progression is from isolated small grids operating at low voltages to regional grids operating at high voltages. As the power consumption increases, there is a need to transfer large amounts of power from generators to consumers. In India, there will be a significant growth in the T&D systems as the per capita power consumption improves to global levels and the per capita GDP moves closer to the developed nations.

Ministry of Power, Government of India has envisaged a capacity addition of 78,577 MW and 86,500 MW in the 11th and 12th Plan period respectively. A corresponding plan for new investment and R&M is also conceived for the Transmission and Distribution segments in line with the National Electricity Plan and the Integrated Energy Policy. The demand for T&D equipments is going to be impacted by multiple factors in the years to come, the most prominent of these factors include Economic Growth, enactment of Electricity Act 2003, National Electricity Policy-2005 and Govt. Schemes like the APDRP & RGGVY.

With an objective to understand the dynamics of the various factors and its effect on the demand for electrical equipment, IEEMA had appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Limited (PwC) to study and assess the power sector development program and its effect on Electrical Equipment industry. IEEMA provided necessary support through team of senior experts from the industry

PWC has completed their study and have submitted their final report to IEEMA. This report is now released for sale to all interested manufacturers, consultants, users, investors, institutions etc.

The Key Objectives Of the Study

Assessment of Power Sector development plans in Generation, Transmission and Distribution

  • Assessment of development plan of major industry verticals
  • Translate these plans into opportunities for Indian Electrical Equipment industry
  • Demand Assessment for various electrical equipments
  • Identify possible major technological transitions and present technology gaps
  • Identify areas of concern related to technology gaps, availability & capacities with regard to raw materials and key components required by Electrical Equipment industry.

Scope of the Study

Study is divided into following vertical segments.

    • Generation segment - This will include all types of generation such as thermal, hydro, nuclear, gas and renewable energy.
    • The transmission segments - Covering the voltage range above 220 KV and also include HVDC and FACTS.
    • Sub-Transmission segment - Covering a voltage range from 66 KV up to 220 KV.
    • Distribution segment – Covering voltage range from 1.1 KV up to 66 KV

The demand assessment in the above verticals of the power sector has been conducted for the following product groups:

1   Switchgear -                        Medium and High Voltage circuit breakers, Isolators GIS SCADA
2   Transformers -                    Distribution Transformers (REC range and Up to 10 MVA)
                                                      Power Transformers (Above 10 MVA)
3   Cables -                              Power Cables (Up to 132 KV and Above 132 KV), Control Cables
4   Transmission Line Towers- Heavy & Light Angles and Hardware Accessories
Conductors for HV Transmission and Sub Transmission ,Insulators
5   Capacitor -                          LT & HT Power Capacitors
6   Energy Meters-                   Single phase (KWH & Multi function) Poly phase (Direct connected & Transformer operated)
7   Instrument Transformers - Current and Potential Transformers
8   Surge Arresters -                 Surge Arresters
& Insulators                       Disc Insulators (including sub-station insulators)
